MEETING THE BACHELOR, ART GREEN

Last night, after 48 hours of X Factor NZ mayhem, I headed along to a beautiful mansion in Grey Lynn where Mediaworks were hosting the launch party for The Bachelor New Zealand. There were a few frazzled TV3 folk who, like me, were quite happy to be stepping away from the drama to sip chardonnay as we watched the first episode of the latest major local series from the network and then meet the man himself.

Host, Mike Puru, who I must say I’m very happy about seeing back on TV (it’s been far too long!), welcomed the small gathering of media, sponsors and advertisers before two Mediaworks bosses shared a few comments about the show.

Having been to a few of these launch parties now, you get a little immune to the sales pitch about how good a show is supposed to be. However, there seemed to be a far greater sense of genuine belief in The Bachelor NZ and the format. It was refreshing.

While I can’t think of anything worse than going on a first date with a film crew, doing that with 21 beautiful women at the same time is terrifying. Yet this is what Arthur Green has chosen to do in search of love.

Everyone was talking Arthur up as a genuinely nice guy and couldn’t speak more highly of him. When he made his way down the staircase just prior to the first episode going to air, he oozed confidence and had all the women in the room swooning.

Arthur’s appearance was brief initially, as he returned upstairs while we all watched the first episode. It was cute. While there wasn’t any seating around the large screen in the living room, women in evening dresses scattered themselves across the floor for the next hour or so as the introductions, mingling and first rose ceremony began.

After the show, Arthur returned to mingle and get photographs against the rose wall in the backyard. He posed like a pro and handled the attention of the many excited women eager for photographs with him like he’d been doing this for a very long time.

He was incredibly comfortable in the environment, was very friendly and came across as a very likeable young man. Based on the short amount of time I spent with Art and seeing him in the wild, I think the producers have done an excellent job in casting.

And while the show is essentially about him, there are 21 other women vying for his attention and ultimately, his heart. With that, come complications.

If The Bachelor plays out as a wonderful, Kiwi love story, then the show is going to do very well with viewers. The producers certainly believe that’s what it is and are confident that New Zealanders will fall in love with it.

Considering how likeable Arthur is, I can totally see why they have that belief.
