My guess is the family is quite comfortable, but they're just not very ostentatious people. They have lived in that house 33 years, according to JP, and they probably moved in, with two small boys, before they became as affluent as they are now. Also, real estate in Roslyn is expensive, so that house is worth more than you think.

I believe as JP's dad is/was in RE, that they also own quite a bit of resort property somewhere in the Caribbean. And possibly elsewhere that we don't know about.

Well, that was not meant to be a slight on them as I am sure they have worked hard for their money; however, I just simply can not help it! I think a $6,000 watch is ridiculous, and I don't care if we are talking about President Obama or Billy Graham.
I have already forgotten the cost of that room per night, but that makes no sense either. At least, that is a promotional deal...

Bloomers, I didn't take it as a slight at all, just trying to explain that while the house may not look as fancy as some of the ones we have seen on this show, it's probably partly because the RE in that area is super expensive and that home probably sells for 2 or 3 times what a comparable home would sell for in a different part of the country. Also, since JP mentioned the family has lived there for 33 years, they would have bought it when they were probably less affluent, and never felt the need to "upgrade" to a McMansion, which is why I said they probably aren't ostentatious people by nature.

As to JP's 6K watch, I probably should have said something earlier, but the odds are good that he didn't actually pay full price for that. There are plenty of jewelry stores where you can get designer watches for less (maybe even half price). Still a lot, but not quite as jaw dropping. And we New Yorkers are used to spending a lot on our accessories, so I guess it didn't faze me that much!

During my guilty pleasure reading of the DABA blog *ahem* I found a commentary about the wardrobe of a typical FBF (Finance Guy Boyfriend) that they usually date -- he's clean cut, usually wears nice suits and shirts along with a big watches (these seem to be their signature items). So it appears watches and them being signs of status along with JP's wardrobe kind of fit into this mold...

The watch could have been a graduation gift from his parents????

Wow this all kind of makes me sad. I can't believe there are really people out there like this. I just thought Gossip Girl was all fictional and crazy! laugh out loud. I am nervous for poor little Ashley from a small town where they buy produce on the "honor system". I really hope these types don't try to eat her alive. I am so happy for JP to have found someone like her.

Dentist sounds better then gold-digger any day. I am sure JP will be much more proud to have her by his side than some Julia Alison wannabe. :awesome:

They are both lucky to find each other. JP can keep Ashley safe amongst the crazies in the city, and Ashley can teach JP that there are still good people out there. heartglasses

I'm sorry; although I would always come down on the side of practical, right now I am still reeling from the tornadoes that came through in May and literally devestated half of the state of Alabama. We are still recovering, and a $6,000 watch when some people have no home left is just atrocious! It is just a matter of perspective. Still, I too have to keep perspective and know that life goes on as usual for other people, and that is life as usual for those particular people in NYC. I say this with a genuine smile.

Well, to be fair, we don't know if the Rosenbaums are involved in charity work either. So while a $6,000 watch may sound exorbitant, it may be perfectly reasonable for them.

To me, I'm more concerned with how they treat people than what they spend money on. They seem to be a very loving, genuine family and I feel like this conversation about how they spend their money is a moot point anyways. handwave

It's very, VERY real. Unfortunately. And I'm not going to open up a huge can of worms and discuss it...but there is a drug culture that is also very present within many of these circles. It was an eye opener for me.

A $6000 watch is a drop in the bucket for many of the people in this city that are making some major $$$$. You should see some of the engagement rings and jewelry that friends/acquaintances have received from their Wall Street/real estate boyfriends. It's ridiculous. I have no doubt that JP is making good money...so buying a classic watch (if he bought it) is probably not an every day occurrence...but it is something that someone like him could afford.

Agreed. I'm sure they'll be fine, they have each other. heartbeat

And as far as the watch, I don't care how much it costs or where it came from, etc. He earned it, it's his money and if he doesn't want to spend it on charity or whatever, it's his choice. By that logic, we would all be living in a commune sharing cardboard boxes because someone is always going to be worse off somewhere. Rolling Eyes
