Trista Sutter: My Dreams Came True Through 'The Bachelorette'
Trista and Ryan Sutter have achieved the impossible -- they found (and sustained!) love on The Bachelorette. As the runner-up of the first season of The Bachelor, Trista went on to become TV's first Bachelorette, and met her now-husband Ryan. The couple have been married for seven years and are parents to Max, 3, and Blakesley, 2.
In the years since meeting on the show, Trista and Ryan have been living a quiet life in Eagle County, Colorado, where Ryan is a firefighter.
Trista, 38, talked to Parade.com about their "normal" life out of the limelight, and how they have channeled their celebrity status into becoming spokespeople for the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement.
The perks of Bachelorette fame."It's fun, I will say that. It's great to get invited to parties or go talk to Ellen or Oprah, but as I get older, I think I really appreciate the ability to help others more. That's probably been the most significant thing to happen through all of this -- just to be able to be a voice for different causes. It really does feel amazing to be able to give back."
Encouraging Americans to become informed during CPR Awareness Week.
"We were more than happy to become involved with this cause. Number one, Ryan is a fire fighter, he's trained in the courses, and so that was a natural fit. And I used to be a physical therapist and had to get certified every year for my job, so I used to be very involved. And then just being a mom, I think it's important for all the parents out there to really know about the courses that exist because God forbid something ever did happen to your own child. CPR is extremely important in saving lives, so we wanted to get involved."
Life post-Bachelorette."Life is great. We thoroughly enjoy parenthood, although we are 'normal,' in that we have our bad days and we have our moments when our children don't listen, but for the most part, we are so grateful for the chance to be parents because it did take us awhile to get pregnant with Max. It was always a dream of mine to be a mom, so I've gotten lots of dreams to come true through the show. We never would have met have if it had not been for the show, so we're thankful for that. For the most part, we do live a quiet life out here and I think it's definitely helped to keep us grounded and together."
Thoughts on the newest Bachelorette, Ashley Hebert. "Love her! I don't think there's every been a Bachelorette that I haven't really thought was adorable and intelligent and articulate, and I think she's all of those things and more. A lot of people have been commenting that she reminds them of me and I take that as a huge compliment because I think that she's bubbly and fun loving, and I think she's beautiful. I'm really excited for her and hope that there's a happy ending."
Advice for Ashley."Enjoy it because it's a once in a lifetime experience. Be yourself and never settle. And I think a major thing is to relax as much as you can. You really need to take any down time that they give you because you're going constantly. What helped me was to keep a journal. Any flight that I took, and geez, I wasn't flying to Bora Bora or Africa or Hong Kong unluckily enough, but anytime I was on a plane I was writing or sleeping. Just to be one with my thoughts and get clarification on what was really happening and what my gut was truly feeling."
On the tabloid drama that today's Bachelors and Bachelorette's face."We actually did, too. Not to the extent that it is now, but I remember Ryan calling me when he read a report in one of the magazines that I had gotten a ticket with [Bachelorette runner-up] Charlie in the car, which was so not true. And I think there was a rumor that I was pregnant with Charlie's baby. We dealt with it a little bit, but definitely not to the level where they have to now. It's horrible."
Why the success stories are so few and far between."One of the things is definitely the tabloid scrutiny, I think a lot of people don't necessarily expect to get that beat down by people they've never met before, so that can be hard. I also think that many get caught up in the lights and the glamour. And I think that some people, even though they may think going into it that they're ready, they're just not ready. And that's not a bad thing, it's just reality.
Why the Bachelor/Bachelorette splits shouldn't be thought of as failures."Even though some people call it a failure if it doesn't work, who's to say that the 25 guys that ABC picks for you are who you're supposed to be with? Maybe there's not one in the bunch that you're compatible with. I think a lot of it has to do with luck and timing. All I can say is I know why Ryan and I are still together, and it's because of hard work, love, compatibility, shared values, fun, and all of the things that hopefully make a successful relationship."
Looking back, would she step into the role again?"Oh yea, for sure. No regrets. I went on the first Bachelor just for fun. The Bachelorette I went on because I thought I really could have a chance at finding someone, and I found him! And thank God because I have the life that I do now with the family that I've always wanted. I definitely wouldn't change it for the world."
Do they ever watch their season?"Oh Lord, no! We were laughing recently about that because our show is actually on VHS tapes. How pathetic is that? I think we need to get the word out that they need to create a DVD set of all of the seasons."
Will they ever let their kids watch their love story?"I think we will for sure. It's part of their history, too. But I will definitely be editing. They don't need to see all of it -- not the parts of us making out heavily on the couch!"

Big: You know, Manhattan has a lot of beautiful women.
Carrie: What an amazing observation!
Big: But the thing is, after awhile, you just wanna be with the one who makes you laugh.

Thats is so beautiful. I hate to admit I really thought Trista might break Ryan's heart and pick Charlie. So glad to be wrong.

I was a 100% sure that she was going to pick Charlie so when she picked Ryan I was thrilled and shocked.
