Blank square there are several squares, where the smilie is.
Do any of those need to be tapped along with smilie.

I am typing in the reply. If I want a smilie or emote and I click on the happy face. That is the only one you need to click on. The other will insert date.2015-07-31 See I just did that. 22:27:52 the next is time. I am not going to click on the last.

Lurker, California law does not permit any hand held mobile
Unit, such as a cell phone, so no selfies while driving. It looked
like Lauren had both hands on the wheel and had her head straight
ahead. If your caught using a hand held cell phone thats a no no.
Common sense tells you not a good idea. But no law.
