How Sobriety Changed Me
It’s been over two and a half years since I had my last drink. The decision to quit drinking was not an easy one, but nothing worth doing is ever easy.
For the first two years I spent quite a bit of time thinking about how different my life was. Every six months or so I would sit down and write about what I was going through, both as a cathartic thought experiment, but also as a way to connect with other people going through the same thing in their lives.
It has been unbelievably rewarding. At first it was terrifying (as all good things are) to expose my weaknesses to strangers. After a while it became helpful. People are remarkably understanding and people want to help. People want to build communities around you and want you to build communities around them.
If there is one thing we all have in common it is certainly imperfection.
We are flawed and we are lost and we don’t always know what we’re doing. The admission of that takes a lot of pressure off of trying to “do everything right.” Once you stop trying to “do everything right,” you stop failing as often.
I didn’t quit drinking “the right way.” I didn’t go to meetings or rid my house of booze or avoid bars. I did it my own way. I recommend all ways. I recommend any way that works for you. Trial and error is the only way to figure out what works for you. And quitting drinking isn’t for everyone. For many people, drinking is a healthy part of their lives. I envy those people because damn do I miss red wine.
But when I sat down at the two and a half year mark to write about drinking, something felt different. It no longer felt like drinking was something I didn’t do anymore. It felt like drinking was not something I did. I know it seems like a small difference, but let me tell you, it is night and day.
Two and a half years ago I couldn’t imagine a world in which I didn’t drink alcohol.
Now I can’t imagine a world in which I do.
I can’t understand what my life was.
So I can’t really write about quitting drinking at this time. But what I can talk about is how your world can change entirely in a very short amount of time. I know. I know this seems obvious, but for people (like me) who get depressed, especially around the holidays, change doesn’t seem possible.
My sobriety taught me that the person you are is never static. The world you live in and understand is never definite. The things you know to be true are not necessarily true. The world changes. You change.

They are so cute together. I wonder if he's planning to propose for New Years.

I don't know if either are ready, but they've been together a year and both seem really happy. Not to mention they're so cute together. I hope it works out for them as a couple. They are one of my favs that have resulted from the show and its incestuous dating pool.

I think they will work out, but don't expect any wedding bells soon, imo. Elan does a lot of crazy hours and traveling. They make a very nice complimentary couple. He is healthy and seems grounded and she is as cute as a button and seems to anchor him. IMO

I don't know if I see Elan doing things the traditional way but a lot of that depends on the woman. Molly seems to be a good fit for him and it doesn't appear she's trying to change anything. I wonder if he keeps the wild hair and beard because he's so good looking under and it doesn't fit his personality?

IMO beautiful people are not about looks, but I really wish he'd trim himself up. He doesn't have to change his personality because of his looks, but IMO IA @albean99 there's a reason he chooses to look like that.

Re: Elan Gale (Producer) & Molly Quinn - Discussion
I've always wanted to have a conversation with Elan since he stopped drinking. It's very inspiring and so difficult to stop. I give him a lot of credit. Yet, the show encourages drinking, providing alcohol all day and night and seems to relish times when contestants are out of control. They get great footage to build their ridiculous storylines
I just wonder sometimes how Elan reconciles his own experience with the drunken antics when filming TB and BIP. Its a great paycheck yeah, but seems hypocritical IMO to be producing shows promoting so much alcohol fueled behavior in contestants.

Nobody forces the alcohol down their throat. I remember reading that the contestants often take after the lead. Sean and JPab didn't have a lot of drinking because they didn't themselves. It's up to the individual how much they drink and how they choose to act.

Many people suffer from a variety of addictions. During recovery, from what I understand you are given tools to deal with the situations that trigger the addiction.
If you had a food addiction or sex addiction or alcohol addiction or whatever, it's not always realistic to remove yourself from the situation, but it is realistic to learn how to deal with being around it. Many have gone on to do this with other never knowing there is even or was even an issue. Kudos to them!

I love this man, and now his Molly. His genius and wit is what
drew me to him. And he's a great cook! In his early SM antics
through periscope he made the most scrumptious dishes.
Believe me he does have good taste even in his hippie style.
He doesn't shop at goodwill. All quality..he's 33 younger than
some of the contestants. LB I'd still follow you any where.
