You can put your phone in airplane mode. I know people leave their iPhones on to listen to music. And everything I have found online says Spotify works on a plane.

Spotify does work on a plane I used it last weekend on a long flight. All you need is wifi

that's only for takeoff and landing. He would have to purchase wifi on the plane which is now available and then he can stream spotify. It's not the same as listening to songs you have downloaded. You can do that without an internet connection.
