jlc, I love that you keep it real about the PW company. I'm sure several of today's posters haven't been here long enough (more than a month?) to remember that I, too, posted my thoughts against a bottled water company and their supposed charitable actions. I, personally, am always careful about where my charitable donations go. I would never buy overpriced bottled water, in a designer not-really-biodegradable bottle for a fraction of the cost to go to digging wells in 3rd world countries. There are plenty of bona fide, not-for-profit companies that have that very same focus where a majority of the donation goes to the wells. Besides, I'm just against the concept of using bottled water for convenience sake anyway. But, that's just me.

I'm also one that doesn't believe you have to have made trips to other countries to do volunteer/charitable work in order to make a difference. I have been a volunteer for various charities/projects in my very own community for over 30 years. I also make regular donations to charities of my choice. I'm sure you have a similar story, jlc, and it's not necessary for you to prove to anyone that you have a charitable heart to justify your posts.

I don't care what 1F chooses to do to "make a living" (except the stated problem I have with bottled water in general). However, I really don't like the concept that they try to sell their bottled water with the well thing as their advertising gimmick. If they want to do good and build wells, I say do it with the millions they already have and quit trying to sell overpriced, designer water to the masses and make them feel good while buying it! /rant

jlccaz, keep fighting the good fight. You have supporters around here even if they aren't vocal about it.

Good Post Chacharo and I second everything you said. I'd like to add that when background and research is provided about the bottled water industry and PW in particular I hate to see it dismssed as "making fun of Jef's company". Rather, it rounds out his picture and fills in some blanks, just the same as the others' stories and backgrounds gradually get filled in.

Here, here! (intentional, that) As I said to someone the other day, People Water is for solving global water scarcity as much as the Monopoly game at McDonald's is about solving poverty in America.

Good Post

For those of us less informed, can you provide the evidence/links to the evidence that make you have these opinions? Thanks!

jlccaz...why the new CEO...was it stated why 1F left this position?

Poor Emily. She has to re-do her job interview and repeat the story about taking a camera lesson at the mall.

Makes me sad to see the Emily bashing. I was busy being a mom at age 26 and really didn't start doing charity work in earnest until I was much older. And I think I'm a pretty good person...

I heard she picked out the ring(s) herself before the show. She probably picks 3 or 4 she loves and F1 and F2 pick from her choices. I do agree that the ring should be donated to a good cause. 90K is ridiculous to spend on a ring. Bet she won't wear it when she is in Africa. lol

News flash from People Water FB Page:
Who wants to ask Jef Holm questions before the big finale? We're going to sponsor a Q&A with him starting tomorrow on crowdhall.com Watch for the invite!I've posted them it seems like a dozen times.

(How is this okay, such a weird season, such blatant use of ABC's platform to promote his product, whatever).

1. It is against the law in California, and highly questionable anywhere, to market with the word "biodegradable" as to plastic water container. ENSO, People Water's supplier is being sued by the California attorney general. The word "biodegradable" was stamped in huge promotional lettering on every box Jef was wheeling around in that sweepstakes/contest video he posted. http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/grnrule/guides980427.htm The FTC has stated:

Degradable/biodegradable/photodegradable: It is deceptive to misrepresent, directly or by implication, that a product or package is degradable, biodegradable or photodegradable. An unqualified claim that a product or package is degradable, biodegradable or photodegradable should be substantiated by competent and reliable scientific evidence that the entire product or package will completely break down and return to nature, i.e., decompose into elements found in nature within a reasonably short period of time after customary disposal.

Claims of degradability, biodegradability or photodegradability should be qualified to the extent necessary to avoid consumer deception about: (1) the product or package's ability to degrade in the environment where it is customarily disposed; and (2) the rate and extent of degradation.
ag.ca.gov/cms_attachments/press/pdfs/n2577_complaint.pdf (complaint against ENSO) http://begreenpackaging.wordpress.com/tag/attorney/

The AG’s complaint asserts that the defendants’ 100% biodegradability claims are “false, deceptive and misleading to consumers because the plastic bottles will not biodegrade as claimed, either in a landfill or any other environment.”

(2) Less meaningful, impactful Starbucks Ethos Water imitation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethos_Water
-- the original claim (which was less misleading than "drop for drop") on the label was changed so as NOT to mislead consumers into thinking that Ethos is primarily a charitable organization, when it is actually a for-profit Starbucks brand and the vast majority of the sale price (over 94%) does not support clean-water projects.

(3) People Water's website and bottle do not explain the "drop for drop" metric in any way that a reasonable consumer could understand it, or that is substantiated with well output numbers that are publicly available. Ethos at least makes it clear: 5 cents goes to charity. If the $16/gallon (!) price of People Water, how much supports well repairs or construction?

(4) They don't report revenues or the amount of their donations to the two named charities. They gave money for three wells so far. At "The Water Project, http://thewaterproject.org/ , we learn that one well costs about $7000. 24 bottles of 16 oz size People Water cost $45.00. How much of that went to charity? At the end of the day, People Water just cuts a check, one presumes, to one of the two charities it supports. Consumers should be able to go on their website, and see how much is being donated.

(5) The well trips (such as the upcoming one to Ghana) are to film footage of people with two new wells, to be used to promote the For Profit business. The wells were completed last April. A PR stunt.

Give directly. Reuse containers. Support Cassie Lambert's Drop in the Bucket directly. Or infinite other better ideas.

If you're really interested in the problem with bottled water in general, I suggest the movie "Tapped." They have a good website at tappedthemovie.com. I can't take credit for finding it - someone here pointed us to it in an earlier conversation - can't remember who. Sorry, I just can't get behind the industry as a whole. I also had another poster enlighten me about some medical problems where bottled water might be a necessity, but I believe that most people use it as a convenience (thanks, Jelle, for giving me the right words to make my point). Also, as pointed out in this trailer and this movie, bottled water doesn't usually come from some beautiful spring in the mountains. It's a huge problem and as evidenced by some schools banning bottled water from their campuses, it will become more and more of both a political and legal issue, as jlc has pointed out numerous times.

On a side, but related note, I read about the FDA banning PBA in baby bottles and sippy cups in my local paper today.

Thanks for sharing the very important info about PW. I really resent and disrespect companies that sell themselves as charitable organizations when they are clearly for-profit and just do a tiny bit of charity on the side. Kind of like Exxon and Chevron sponsoring the occasional PBS special as if that makes up for the terrible damage they do to our world. It's especially egregious in this instance as they brag about bio-degradable packaging when the company that manufactures that exact packaging is being sued by the state of California bacause it is not bio-degradable. Innocent consumers really need to be informed of this so thanks!

Now that the thorough research on the 'evils' of PW and the bottle water industry has been completed, maybe the noble professions of insurance agent and race care driver (and their respective industries) can be probed? Many thanks in advance.
