I think all municipal water is treated, isn't it? I'm not being snarky - really thought that to be the case.
In my personal case, we live in the country with well water as our only source. Straight out of the well would be yucky, that's why we have a water softener and a water filter - so it's more potable. Here's an interesting article about bottled water coming from municipal sources and other questionable sources for those who are interested. If you're not interested, please scroll on.

Not all cities have municple water. My parents have a well and when the power goes out so does the water, there are times bottled water is a necessity. Also, when I was in Europe the past few weeks, I was not going to wear a camelback through England, Switzerland and Italy, nor was I going to go thirsty. I drank bottled water, however in Rome I did use fountains to refill.

Some well water is dangerous for you to drink. Locally we have old copper mills and people are dying. My Mom in NC had arsenic in hers and cvould not drink it. Mine is great, so far. Who knows anymore.

It's amazing to me that people somehow survived all those years before bottled water...

True, but its also amazing how many people got sick and died when there wells got contaminated. Neither here nor there, but I am not going to feel guilty for drinking it in certain circumstances. Sometimes it really is the safest/best option.

Yeah, no kidding. We used to drink water out of the garden hose outdoors when playing. I'm sure that's a nono now too and probably cancer causing or something.
We also lose water when we lose power and we've been able to manage the few hours it takes to get the power back on so far without bottled water. On one occasion, we were out for 6 days during an ice storm and I took 5 gallon containers to my in-laws every day to fill them just so I could flush the toilets. I wasn't concerned about dehydration for myself, but I really didn't want to have to use the great outdoors to potty until the power was back on.

Bottled water is NOT an eco friendly product, period. Your graphic tells the story perfectly. Bottled water companies like Coke (Dasani) and Pepsi (Aquafina) don't care. The ones that want shelf space at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods type stores do care, but the degradable bottles (which IMPROVE but don't RESOLVE the issue) are very expensive.
There are infinite superior more efficient more carbon friendly means to drill wells in third world countries, which is an extremely laudable goal.
My younger son attends a private, highly progressive middle school. Waste free lunches, etc. They are not allowed to bring bottled water to school. They are trained to use refillable stainless steel water bottles. That's the eco-friendly DOGMA these days.
So what "Cody" was talking about is a challenge for start up bottled water companies. Their target market -- affluent liberals -- if they are smart about ecology at all knows that the "right" answer is to avoid bottled water, and donate money to drill wells.
The Grand Canyon has banned sales of bottled water inside the park. Utah national parks are trying to do the same. Colleges are doing this as well. http://www.heraldextra.com/news/national/ivy-colleges-shun-bottled-water-in-a-jab-at-billion/article_d6f0b720-43fa-59e8-bbe8-693a33d45363.html
And wow, am I now off topic or what.

Good thing we're not at FORT. We'd be getting suspensions until we could stay on topic.
Anyhoo, don't get me started on plastic bags.

I logged in to FORT recently for old time's sake. I had some treasured PMs over there from back in the day, but I purged them all last year. But my four infractions were still there. Baiting. Who me.

I never got an infraction there - too afraid to post anything. I did, however, get a post deleted and for the life of me, never did figure out why.
I guess if we get in off-topic trouble, the Utah travel commercial thread will get it too.
(I kid - I know that Love_Me and San would never do that)
