I don't personalize the show's situations mostly because they aren't real. They stage or script situations that evoke a reaction based on the insights gleaned from extensive psychological evaluations--that's a proven fact. The lead or characters' reactions really are the only parts that are 75% real. They know the insecurities of everyone there, including their lead, and they set up the interactions to play on those insecurities. Hence the storyboards.

I once sat next to a producer during a flight to Phoenix. He filmed a reality show for a smaller network, so I asked him if anything was real. He told me that everything was staged; that a producer is in the various characters' ears each day directing them, "Today, you are going to pick a fight when you're on the date. When asked if something's wrong, deny it." I saw it play out with Ben. The producers convinced him that Ashley was in love with him. Look at what they did to Ashley with Bentley. They are doing the same here. Emily is massively insecure and they are working her over. In the end, it's a TV show that's built on drama and raw emotion. If someone makes it out of the show in love, it's a bonus.

For whatever reason, the show didn't want Emily with Arie. They set up enough obstacles, including this one which would largely be read by Southern Belle Emily as rude, and knew it would add to the topple of Emrie. They also capitalized on the insecurity she felt with Arie to pivot her fully towards Jef for a very specific reason.

P.S. I am a Ryan fan first and foremost.

They wanted to steer Arie and Emily together , in order to have a shocking elimination later. I think once they realized they had an extraordinarily compelling future Bachelor lead in the making , they had to make sure he would be heartbroken and single at the end.

As I have come to understand: They want and allow the lead to make connections at the M&G. Many hours later most report they have a top 5. Production chooses the rest to make sure the keep some drama possibilities. Production does not know these men yet until they see how they interact with the group in action. Sometimes they are surprised they have drama where they did not expect it. No one person is hired to be in a certain slot. There is no need for that. They want chemistry to happen with the lead and they cannot predict or steer that. They don't care who she/he chooses. They have a story regardless.

Sceens are reshot if producers get an idea of how it would go better always in seek of drama. One example I spotted was when Jef said he broke up with a girl because his parents didnt like her. His family confirmed my suspicions later when they were shocked and said it never happened. I think Jef probably said, of course not. During these reshoots they get to know each other better and probably have a laugh and bond more or not. They get to see each other outside of the stilted sceenes we have to sit through. More outakes please!

And, of course, we have totally manipulated to the hilt reality shows that are so over the top ridiculous that we can spot that immediately. It is not the same across the board.

Good info Shoepie. The contestants need really thick skins and great senses of humor to get through this. Regarding the psychological evaluations, how do you see those factoring in to TP's choice of the 25, and how much consideration do you think they actually give to the leads 'list' or personality as they plug in the 25?

I think they do consider the leads wishes as much as they can. They want a successful show and that means some contenders. I have no clue about the testing. I assume it that same 5 page stock test that is everywhere and has been for years. Pretty lame and dumb test. It is pretty easy to judge character from a couple of interviews and a background check.

Good question - I found a group of them posted one night and grabbed this one, then couldn't remember who made them. I've been thinking I need to ask who did it so I can give proper credit, but kept forgetting about it. So board members, can you direct us?

Michael also posted it and that's where I originally grabbed it from. I do have it cropped so all you see is the picture and not the surrounding stuff if you'd like me to post that too, just let me know.

Ladybug, thank you! That pix of them is priceless - and the words you chose to go around it is perfect!

ETA: Everytime I look at it, I think Robert Redford and Paul Newman - the best on-screen bromance ever!

I think people need to remember a few things:
This is a scripted reality show. The parents sign contracts as well. The parents definitely have to follow the script or the producers cut and reshoot. I know of an exact instance where it happened. Parent said no.Producer said you have to you signed a contract. It's a tv show. I think tb franchise is trying to make their reality tv show look like reality with all of these weird Cassie Emily thing, CH explaining things. Again they have A LOT riding on naive fans who think the show is real. Even Emily admits that some things are production things in the Cassie Arie clip

I think all three of the "favorites" being shown in the previews as having obstacles, and the only seemingly "perfect" date being the one with the guy we know Emily cares little about, should be a clue that much of the "drama" was set up by the producers.

Regarding the "language barrier", as Arie and all his siblings are obviously fluent in Dutch, it probably indicates that the language routinely spoken in the home growing up was Dutch, which isn't always the case with parents who emigrate to the US. I personally would find it wonderful to marry somebody with this background, and not only have the opportunity to learn another language myself, but know that my future children will most likely grow up bilingual, which IMO, will make it easier for them to learn even more languages in the future. To me, this would be an advantage, but I have no idea if Emily feels the same way, or would routinely feel out of place and resentful of being at family gatherings where a lot of Dutch was spoken, and she would most probably be encouraged to learn the language and "broaden" her horizons in order to feel more comfortable. I do think that how she reacts to the situation, if we even get an accurate picture of it, or if editing distorts it, would give a clue to how she feels about things, and whether she views it as a positive or a negative. I also think that the mixed reaction on the board is not only influenced by whether or not someone is an Arie fan/detractor/apologist, but how they would feel if they were in Emily's shoes themselves (which is no doubt influenced by their own experiences with, and attitudes towards, the issue at hand).
