I just viewed them! I taught they were really fun!!

No worries, and thanks for answering, Ice-9. I just thought it was a cute moment, and compared to some of the hair-curling stuff I've seen from our fellow citizens abroad, I didn't think it was anything offensive or obnoxious. And, as I mentioned, I have no problem with Jef and Emily ditching the etiquette lesson. I thought that video was rather hilarious, myself.Ice-9 wrote:Archer23 wrote:I was gonna let this go, but I'm curious to know what was "ugly American" about it? He wasn't rude to anyone. He wasn't disrespecting his hosts. He wasn't interfering with the enjoyment of his fellow tourists. Having traveled all over the world and witnessed some truly obnoxious ugly American behavior, I'm failing to see what the issue is here.Ice-9 wrote:momoftrips wrote:Sean and Emily:

I'm way late here, but I just watched the one from Sean's date, and OMG, I was totally cringing/laughing when he stood up on the bus and shouted "Hello London!" Such an ugly American thing to do. I'm really hoping the producers told him to do that instead of it being his idea. I mean, yikes.
Also, was it "ugly American" behavior for Jef and Emily to be bored and ditch the etiquette lesson to go to the pub? I thought it was funny, but I suppose others might accuse them of being ungracious guests if they were looking to nitpick.
I wasn't looking to nitpick (although that's kinda what everyone does here), and I guess ugly American may not be the precise phrase I meant it as. It's more the idea of Americans being loud where ever we go, and yelling off the top of a double decker bus seems obnoxious to me. But I even said in what I wrote that it was probably the producers that made him do it and wasn't meant as a slight to Sean at all.
As far as Jef and Emily go, I don't see how those situations are comparable at all. Not to mention the fact that we haven't seen how it happens. There could be ways that they leave the lesson that I might find incredibly rude, but I wouldn't connect them to the impression Americans make while travelling abroad because that would be a specific instance rather than out in public, yelling for everyone to hear.
And BTW, I have travelled to Europe numerous times and you can be rest assured that I probably played the part of an ugly American the first time I was there. For example, playing the shadow game in the British Museum isn't particularly dignified In my defense I was right around my 13th birthday at the time, so I'll blame my immaturity.
Now I feel like I'm rambling, but I didn't mean my comment as any big thing and feel like it came across worse than I meant it and now with what I've just typed it probably made it worse. Probably time for bed!

Glad I was able to clear that up! And it's definitely true that many Americans abroad are MUCH MUCH MUCH worse!

That could be a discussion for an entirely different forum.
Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in your garage makes you a car.

Out of the those .. Jefs takes the cake...

You mean the "2 bite" sandwich? I love it when the teacher said we normally have little tongs for those and Jef says ok like he really cared. :giggle:
I don't think they realized that the thongs were for picking up the sandwiches. Not to pick the sandwich up with your fingers, off the plate. They don't use the thongs for eating with.

Hilarious, Teenamarie!!
Iluvbachette, so funny that they had so many little rules and constant interruptions! Like the handle has to face the Boss of the Tea! haha
What a great date it's going to be to watch!

i agree
"Reality television frequently portrays a modified (...) day-to-day life, at times utilizing sensationalism to attract audience viewers and increase advertising revenue. Participants are often placed in exotic locations or abnormal situations, and are often persuaded to act in specific scripted ways by off-screen "story editors" or "segment television producers" with the portrayal of events and speech manipulated and contrived to create an illusion of reality through direction and post-production editing techniques." ~ Wikipedia |
